PATIENCE

finding my word of the year was relatively easy this year. i wanted something that would encourage me to move as opposed to focusing on getting ready to start, something that would inspire me to appreciate and honour the process of becoming. and then it appeared: patience.

i don’t really do new year resolutions anymore because i tend to set out life goals i want to achieve in a year around my birthday but i do enjoy settling on a guiding word of the year in january because it’s a nice check-in point and gears me up quite nicely to actively work towards those goals.

for a good few years now, i’ve taken part in yoga with adriene’s 30 days of yoga challenge and the theme this year ‘breath’ has been a brilliant way to lay the foundations of re-centring my focus onto the journey of getting to where i want to be. especially now that my anxiety has kicked up a notch this month, it has been interesting to navigate that and reshape my perspective on what’s important to me right now.

and what’s been an invaluable addition this year, is doing the challenge with a friend of mine. our daily check-ins at 6pm forces me to truly take stock of what happened on the mat in the morning - which is when i do yoga - by finding the words to articulate how the practise made me feel and what it taught me that day.

so often i run on auto-pilot and rarely take the time to think critically about anything and i want and need that to change. enter patience, stage left.
