MOVIE MONDAYS: PACIFIC RIM

When I first saw a clip of the trailer for this movie I thought it was going to be a grown up version of Power Rangers....which it sort of was lol. Okay, maybe Transformers is a better comparion? Although I absolutely adore Power Rangers (yes, I do realise that the statement is in present tense), I was a bit wary of the film as my mind had already begun to wander into the various realms of possible story-lines for the movie.

But then I caught another clip of the trailer on another day and it was of a man that is like no other: Idris Elba. I was sold.

I saw the movie two weeks ago with a couple friends of mine after we had an amazing dinner at a Thai restaurant in China Town. Due to us thoroughly enjoying the delicious food  we missed a couple minutes of the start of the film which really put me on edge. I hate  missing parts of films; most especially the beginning. I normally decide to wait for the next showing but I put on my big girl knickers and sat through the film and I tried my best to catch up with what was unfolding before my eyes. I am very glad I did.

I think the film was really good.

To quickly summarize, the movie is about the world being attacked by these evil humongous monsters (Kaiju) that lie beneath the Pacific ocean and the lengths human beings take to thwart the plans of the evil kaiju. It was directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hell Boy; Pan's Labyrinth) and the screenplay was whipped up by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham (Clash Of The Titans). The film was filled with a lot of understated actors (well, to me anyways) that were another breath of fresh air.

Although Idris Elba always has a place in my heart, without a shadow of doubt, my favourite character has to be Mako! Especially young Mako. Mana Ashida, who acted as as young Mako, blew Dakota Fanning off the pedestal of talented kid actors. I was in complete awe.  The slightly older version of Mako (a smart, beautiful, stubborn, determined and funny woman) was played wonderfully by Rinko Kikuchi (Norwegian Wood; The Brother's Bloom). I really liked her. Will definitely be catching up on projects she has worked on. Next up we have Idris Elba (The Wire; Luther; Prometheus; Thor) who took on the role of Stacker- the Marshall/Commanding Officer that exudes so much power he does not need to declare who he is or what kind of authority he has. You just know who is in charge. Idris was great as usual. He can do wrong in my eyes. Then we have good old Charlie Hunnman (Sons Of Anarchy; Green Street), the man that played the role of Raleigh- a former pilot that is riddled with so much pain and brilliance that you cannot not like him. There is something about him. he just seems so down-to-earth.

With all great movies, you have to have someone to lighten the mood. Dr. Newton, a very smart scientist that was also a Kaiju fanatic, was that guy. Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses; It's Always Funny In Philadelphia) had the honour of owning that role. He had me in stitches! I could go on and on about the characters but I feel I should stop there before I give too much away. If you are unsure about going to see it, check out the trailer below and just give it a go. I know my opinions probably do not mean diddly squat to you, as my taste in films is kind of weird if I am honest, but I still say go see it :)

Till next time!
