MOVIE MONDAYS: BRAVE

Do you ever have those groups of friends that you see maybe 2-8 times a year, even though you live in the same city, and it feels like time has not passed at all since you last saw each other? Well, I had one of those get-togethers a few weeks ago. And after the chinwag session, which occurred as we stuffed our faces with some yummy food and had the obligatory movie marathon, the short film, Brave, that I am sharing with you all today was brought to my attention. And I am so glad it was.

Written and directed by Lowla Dee (The CallBe My Guest), a young aspiring film-maker, Brave is a short film that shines a light on marriage and explores the notion that there is a price to pay when one chooses to love someone forever that some people are not aware of and its gravity. This well-made 30 min film gives us an insight into the lives of Layo and her husband, Nathan; a young married couple whose love for one another is brought into question one fateful day. I know, that is probably one of the vaguest description ever but you guys should know the drill by now- you will find no spoilers on this blog.

Now, I have not watched a Nollywood film in years as the quality of most of the ones I've seen were never to my liking. But I must say for a short film, this has achieved something the Nollywood productions I have seen did not- it captured my attention and released it only when the end credits appeared sooner than I expected. Although the sequencing of some scenes was not as seamless as I would have liked, the film as a whole was commendable; can't wait to see what Lowla Dee comes up with next. Adesua Etomi (The Miller's TaleThe CallLes Miserable) and Adewole Ojo's (The ChildMAAMI) performance in Brave as Layo and Nathan respectively was really good. I will definitely be keeping a look out for projects they work on that I can get hold of.

Brave is said to be inspired by a true story shared by T. D. Jakes in his book, 'The Lady, Her Lover and Her Lord'. I, myself, have not read the book but I can say that this film gave me quite a bit to think about regarding the relationships we form and the honesty behind the words we say to those around us and to ourselves.

I strongly suggest that if you do have 30 mins to spare in your day, take the time to watch this thought-provoking short film (click here to watch Brave).

What short film have you seen lately?
