MOVIE MONDAYS: DRIVE
This movie surprised me every 10 mins. It was as though Ryan Gosling's character, who is nameless if I remember correctly, tried his best to elude my pathetic attempts to define him. I almost never read the synopsis of any movie I am about to watch or a book I want to read. But for this movie in particular, I am so glad I didn't. It kept me guessing. I was captivated from the moment I saw the back of his head having that weird phone conversation that I initially presumed to be about him being a male prostitute.

Hey, don't judge me. My mind was frantically trying to label him.
But I couldn't.
Not until the very end.
This film is definitely another one that goes into the "What was he thinking when he accepted this role?!" pile of films that I have for Ryan Gosling. He is not an actor that sticks to one genre that is for sure.
The movie
This 2011 film is filled with action, crime, passion, mystery, love, trust, honesty and simplicity that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Drive is based on the book written by James Sallis. It was directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and the screenplay was written by Hossein Amini (Snow White and the Huntsman). Obviously, this movie starred people other than Ryan Gosling - Albert Brooks (Weeds; Finding Nemo; The Simpsons),Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle; Breaking Bad; Argo), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men; Life As We Know It;I Don't Know How She Does It) and Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go; The Great Gatsby; Brothers; An Education). I do not even think I have a favourite character as each one brought something vital to the table.
If you have not watched this movie I seriously think you should give this a go. I totally understand why it got the attention and awards it did from a host of various bodies that support, promote, award movies e.g. BAFTAS, Golden Globes, IFTA, Cannes Film Festival-of which Nicolas Winding Refn won Best Director for Drive- and many more. I shall stop babbling now and let your eyes rest. If you did manage to read all of what I just wrote...wow! Kudos to you ;-)
Till next time!
Luv, Mo
