MOVIE MONDAYS: JUPITER ASCENDING

Spending Valentine's day with your 16 year old brother can be all kinds of awesome especially when you are so alike. Cupid had set up the day such that I introduced my brother, Suji, to the magic that is salted popcorn as we watched Jupiter Ascending. He claims he does not like salted popcorn but he pretty much finished the bag of popcorn I got for us so... After our trip to the cinema we had a bit of an impromptu photoshoot (pictures may or may not surface on this ol' space- no promises) and then ended the day at home bonding over bowls of special fried rice and barbecue ribs from our local Chinese Take Away. All in all I would say it was a great day and that was partly to do with the film I am about to talk about today.

Hm...where do I begin? The Wachowski brothers (Cloud AtlasSpeed Racer; The Matrix) were the kind souls to create this original sci-fi world for us acting, as one would expect, as both directors and scriptwriters. My brother and I really enjoyed Jupiter Ascending and would happily see it again. And seeing as I and my siblings adore The Matrix trilogy, it does make sense that this kind of film would be right up our street. Although we had a lot of questions regarding most of the characters by the end, it must be said that the film was very visually pleasing and its script was quite entertaining. As for the soundtrack, intense as it may be, it did not overpower the story being told at all. And the hair, make-up and costume departments for this project need to be commended as there were more than a few notable looks and pieces that caught my eye. Bottom line, Jupiter Ascending did not fail to amuse me.

Jupiter Ascending, in a nutshell, is centred on a girl called Jupiter whose head is as high above the clouds as her name might suggest but whose heart is as vast as space itself. As her life takes an unusual action-prone turn which changes her view on humanity forever, we are taken on a beautiful, emotional and suspenseful journey right along with her. And it is the talented and beautiful Mila Kunis (Friends With BenefitsBlack SwanThat '70s Show) one who brings the courageous and slightly gullible Jupiter to life. A very complex and highly skilled ex-military hunter whom I want to know so much more about and goes by the name Caine Wise was played by the one and only Channing Tatum(FoxcatcherWhite House Down21 Jump Street). And it seems the word on the interwebs was indeed true, the lovely Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of EverythingLes MisérableThe Other Boleyn Girl) was cast as Balem Abrasax - a formidable power hungry character - and played him remarkably well I thought. Nikki Amuka-Bird (LutherSurvivorsFive Days), Sean Bean (LegendsGame of ThronesThe Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings), Tuppence Middleton (Sense8The Imitation GameThe Love Punch) and Douglas Booth (The Riot ClubNoahLOL) also made up the impressive cast.
