Behind-the-Scenes

Protective Hair Style: Clip-In Extensions

Eeeep! This is my first attempt at doing one of these thingys hehe.

It was so much fun to do! I must say that I got the idea to do this last year when I came across Shirley B Eniang's youtube video. I am sure you all know Shirley :).I decided not to do it because I took a vow not to do another weave or braids until I was capable of handling my hair. I did not want to just tuck it away anymore.

Now, I have come a long way since then I feel haha and with this cold, cold season that is upon us, I have decided to use this as an alternative to a full-on weave. Using this clip-in technique, I will be able to still treat,  wash and condition my hair every week as well as properly taking care of the extensions themselves.

Tools you will need:

As you can probably tell I have been having so much fun editing my photos of late. I really wouldn't mind taking up a photography class in the near future.

Obviously, you will need the wefts of hair of your choice to sew the clips onto. I cannot remember the size of the clips I ordered but, depending on the shops you have around you, I'd advise you get them from ebay. It was soo much cheaper there than in the hair stores around me.

What you need to do:
Measure the weft of hair needed for each line. I started from the nape of my neck- my bottom hairline basically- and worked my way up. I left about 1" - 1.5" between each weft; it really depends on how full you want your hair to be. The larger the weft, the more clips you will need for security reasons lol.

Here is a snapshot of what my 1st attempt at sewing on the clip onto the weft of hair looked like:
Unfortunately, I do not have black thread. I was waaaay too excited to wait to go buy some so I decided to use the navy blue. At the end of the day, no one but me...and you will know hehe.

I wanted to show you this mostly because it took me a while wrap my head around the orientation of the clip. Sewing it in this manner allows for you to easily slide the "teeth" of the clips into your hair when the clip is open.

Depending on if I relax my hair or not, I shall put up photos of what the clips look like on my head. Hope this was helpful for some of you looking for ways to cut corners in the money you allocate to getting a weave done. Like I said in my last post- I love to experiment with different things I can do to take care of my hair.

Look out for my essential oils and carrier oils series :)

Till next time!
